"FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT AND THE WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT.
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN MANAGEMENT AND STAFF"
Presentation by
J.R. Dean, PhD, C5 Plus Ltd.
Surveys of more than 500,000 Canadian office building occupants
consistently show that IAQ is perceived as one of their most serious health
risks while at work.
In newly constructed office space, conditions often exist which may cause
some of the occupants to find the indoor working environment to be less
than ideal. Many studies that appear in the literature report that health
problems and employee complaints typically begin soon after occupancy of
new or renovated office space.
There are several variables that influence the real and perceived quality
of atmosphere in an office space. They include the quality and maintenance
of the building’s HVAC system, the hours of HVAC operation, the
distribution of ventilation air, the number and distribution of staff
within individual office floors and the modes of communication with that
staff. The Facility Manager typically has control only over a few of those
variables.
The primary benefit of a program that will demonstrate that your workplace
is healthy is your company's ability to help alleviate, thorough effective
communication techniques, any concerns that your colleagues may have. In
addition, in today's competitive market for high quality staff, an
effective communication system can be a significant differentiator. You
probably have recognized that "sick building" complaints and subsequent
employee sick days can have a significant impact on group performance and
corporate bottom line profits.
This presentation will discuss approaches to minimizing employee workplace
health concerns through communication techniques. In addition, it will
present data supporting an approach that is currently being used
extensively in Alberta and which is demonstrated to be effectively
alleviating office employee concerns.

"MODULAR INTERIOR DESIGN & SUSTAINABILITY"
Green
Building and Sustainability projects continue to be topics of interest
directly related to Facility Management and Facility Management
Professionals. On February 21st, IFMA Calgary is offering a presentation on
"Modular Interior Design and Sustainability", featuring Keynote speaker
Brian Sinclair.
This presentation will explore / underscore the need for cultural /market
/system transformation in direct support of design & sustainability. This
highlights the need for moving away from business-as-usual and towards more
open, agile and flexible environments. As Brian explains, "... my interests
are in educating, motivating and transforming our professions & industries
towards better design and greater sustainability".
This event will be hosted by Haworth in the newly renovated 25,000 sq. ft.
Calgary Showroom and Learning Center. The goal of the Learning Center is to
educate clients on how to plan and construct sustainable and modular
interiors, and how to utilize wood as a sustainable building material. The
renovation is an applicant for the Canada Green Building Council's
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) CI Certification.
Venue tours will be offered following the presentation.

"CALGARY COURTS CENTRE"
Calgary Courts Centre is
an institutional tower in downtown Calgary, Alberta. It was constructed by
the Government of Alberta and provides over 1 million square feet (90,000
m2) of modern architectural space from world-renowned designer, Carlos Ott.
The complex has incorporated many post-9/11 security measures into its
design, such as large steel barriers that can be raised to prevent cars
from entering the glass atrium. One difference between the CCC and
conventional buildings is its ability to withstand structural damage. The
structure has been designed to remain standing even after 2/3s of the
exterior columns on the first six floors have experienced failure. This is
possible because each tower contains more structural steel than both of the
52 story Bankers Hall towers combined, rendering the building virtually
airplane-proof. The courtrooms features bullet-proof judges' benches, jury
boxes, and witness stands.
The Calgary Courts Centre features:
-
Improved public
accessibility to court and associated legal services
-
Critical expansion
space to address current and future needs
-
Ability to adapt to new
technologies for security, information systems and communications
-
Better integration of
court services and more efficient use and sharing of resources such as
space, equipment and staff, prisoner security and public safety

"THE BOW PROJECT"
Join IFMA Calgary
Chapter for this special evening presentation on The Bow Project.
As the 6th Avenue 'bridge' is rushing towards re-opening, residents of
Calgary are getting a glimpse of some of the dramatic innovations that will
be incorporated into the BOW project for EnCana's head office. The 58
storey all steel structure will incorporate express elevators to landscaped
sky gardens. The office floors will employ under floor air delivery and
operable windows to the sky garden atria. The curvature of the Bow is
oriented to maximum sunlight exposure from the south west. The double skin
along this facade will permit the building to harvest solar energy for
reuse in occupied spaces or to buffer against excessive heat gain. The
exterior windows will also harness the high rise stack effect to flush cool
fresh air into the building late a night. In addition the below grade will
have one of the city's largest shipping receiving facilities directly under
6th Avenue with 1360 parking spaces and storage areas for 350 bicycles.
