COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Asbestos Awareness

"HERITAGE LUNCH & LEARN SERIES"
"The Science of Underfloor Air"
Developers, building owners and architects face a complex challenge: build
buildings that are not only pleasing aesthetically, but also are efficient,
flexible and smart. Designers and builders must create structures that can
be constructed economically, operate efficiently and be ready to change at
a moment’s notice. Distributing air through the floor can go a long way
toward accomplishing those objectives. Popular in Europe and Japan for many
years, underfloor air distribution is now making inroads in North America.
As raised access floors become a preferred means of delivering voice, data
and power, developers recognize the added value those floors can provide as
a means of air distribution. Underfloor air technology can improve indoor
environmental quality, reduce construction and operating costs, and boost
productivity by giving occupants greater control over their environment and
their comfort.

"The
Roaring 20’s – An Evening of Murder, Mystery and Intrigue"
The Calgary Chapter of
IFMA is excited to present “The Roaring 20’s - An Evening of Murder,
Mystery and Intrigue”. We cordially invite you to join us for IFMA
Calgary’s major fundraising and social event of the year!
This year the event will take place in Gunn’s Dairy Barn at Heritage Park.
The evening will feature an extraordinary dinner coupled with interactive
entertainment, a fantastic social and networking opportunity and a silent
auction.
Silent Auction Donations:
This event continues to be the primary fundraiser for the IFMA Calgary
Chapter. Funds raised from the Silent Auction enable the Calgary Chapter to
continue to offer members valuable services, education, activities and
events and ensures the smooth operation of the chapter throughout the year.
Our success would not be possible without the generous donations from our
Calgary members to the silent auction. This year, our goal is to exceed the
donations and funds raised last year and continue to offer a variety of
silent auction items. Your generous donations, (cash, gift certificates or
merchandise) will be recognized on the bid sheets and will reflect your
generous support. IFMA will gratefully accept cash contributions, which
will be used to purchase items for the silent auction. Donations with
Corporate insignia are also accepted.

"HABITAT FOR HUMANITY"
As
you know, IFMA Calgary Chapter, earlier this year, selected Habitat for
Humanity as the charity the Chapter would support on an on-going public
basis. The obvious connection of facilities management to Habitat for
Humanity and the extremely valuable service that they provide to the
community were critical factors in the selection. The fact that all
of us can actively participate in this good work was another important
factor which contributed the Board’s decision. We anticipate that many of
our members will want to help with the good work of Humanity for Humanity
when IFMA Calgary calls for volunteers. In addition the IFMA Calgary
Executive will have the option of making a contribution to our charity on
an annual basis.
As
part of our support to Habitat for Humanity, please join us on December 8th
as Diane Reed of Habitat for Humanity will be speaking about their
organization and how we can collectively get involved as individuals or as
a group.
ABOUT
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY - CALGARY
Habitat for Humanity -
Calgary builds simple, decent and affordable homes in partnership with the
community and with the families who will own them. Their homes are built
almost completely by volunteers using building materials, land and money
donated by individuals, businesses, service clubs, foundations and faith
communities. Habitat - Calgary was formed in 1988. To date, they have
built 42 homes, and 66 adults and 137 children are building equity in their
homes and their lives. Their donors and volunteers are currently building
Sun court, a condo complex of 27 townhouses.
Habitat builds houses are
built with, not for, the families who will purchase them. Selected families
pay for their homes with no-interest, long-term mortgages. Mortgage
payments go into a "Fund for Humanity" which is used to build future
Habitat homes.

"HERITAGE LUNCH & LEARN SERIES"
Clean Motivations:
Examining your motivations for maintaining a clean workplace environment
Join IFMA Calgary Chapter on January 10, 2006 for a Lunch & Learn
presentation on “Clean Motivations”. This presentation is derived from some
research Steve Holt did in Calgary and Toronto early in 2005 where he asked
Facility Manager’s to rank in importance four reasons for contracting
specialty cleaning services.
They were as follows:
-
Helping my company
maintain a professional image
-
Helping protect the
assets of my company
-
Helping me protect the
health & welfare of the employees of the company
-
Helping employees have
pride in their workplace
Each of these
motivations has differing implications in the type and style of cleaning
required, frequencies and areas of attention. For example, a company that
often hosts customers at their premises will want entrance carpets cleaned
frequently and with the most thorough method available. On the other hand,
if customers almost never attend the facility there may be a motivation to
protect employee welfare. In this case emphasis needs to be directed to
other areas.
Steve will also share a list of factors to consider when choosing a
cleaning supplier. This would be an attempt to understand the factors that
are most important to consider when preparing an RFP or tender document for
cleaning services. A number of new issues has emerged in recent months such
as security and healthy environmental concerns.

Colour …Response in
Facility Management, Design and Life
Colour is often the most powerful yet the most misunderstood tool in both
the development and management of effective interior environments. Its’
significance in the built environment is often lost in lieu of imposed
fashion and trend. In this high impact session, colour theories are
explored, facts are presented and myths are separated from realities.
Without compromising design aesthetics, practical knowledge will be gained
on how colour can become an ally in achieving client goals, increasing
productivity and achieving measurable success.
Join IFMA Calgary
Chapter on March 7, 2006 for a Lunch & Learn presentation on “Colour”.
