"COLOUR...RESPONSE
IN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT & IN LIFE"
Color is a key element in the facilities we manage and design ... yet with
lost significance. In a presentation of proven facts and practical
examples, the often misunderstood and powerful response to colour will be
explored. Together, we will examine human response to colour,
separate myths from realities, and go beyond the fashion trends that are
often imposed in the interior environment. This insightful discussion
will clearly illustrate how color can support success in achieving your
business goals, defining unique corporate culture and
resolving generational conflicts; a tool for retaining happy, committed
employees and returning higher shareholder value.
PRESENTER:
MICHAEL PARKER is a respected interior designer in Calgary. With more
that 30 years of experience in design services, he is known for his
knowledge based approach in the creation of interior environments for
diverse sectors ... environments that are efficient and easily managed yet
innovative and effective. Parker's knowledge of the workplace has
been shared with major corporations and professional organizations and he
is a frequent speaker at NEOCON.
TEDDY BEAR DRIVE
Each year at our December meeting, we collect stuffed animals of the nature
that would comfort a small person in distress.
We take these to the YWCA who distribute them through their hamper
program and through the Sherriff King Home.
We are asking each person attending to bring a new, or like new,
stuffed animal.

"Making the Workplace a Playplace"
Ever
noticed how there is little in the workplace that speaks “Play” to us.
We categorize work over here and play over there, and don’t typically have
the two in the same room. Well we are about to change that old
business model. We are excited to bring play into the workplace. Play that
includes music, team building, laughter and this time the hierarchy in the
organization doesn’t matter. We accomplish this with drumming. Not typical
drums, but African Djembe and Sabar drums. David Thiaw, a master drummer
from Senegal, West Africa will be guiding us through a fun filled drum
workshop where we will learn some traditional African rhythms. Join us on
March 30th for this event – it’s sure to bring out the play in
all of us.

"Facility Tour: "Art
Smith Aero Centre for Training and Technology"
The Art Smith Aero Centre for Training and
Technology opened for business at the Calgary International Airport in
September 2004. The facility is 106,000 square feet and occupies 17 acres.
The Centre includes:
- 21,500 square foot
hangar, large enough to accommodate a Boeing 737-700 and several small
aircraft and helicopters
- 13 labs, including
five aircraft structures labs (sheet metal and composite material), one
gas turbines lab, three avionics labs and four aircraft maintenance labs
- Seven classrooms
- An Aviation Alumni
Student Resource Centre
- Two computer labs
- Two reciprocating
engine test cell labs
- Open study areas
- A cafeteria with
corporate catering abilities
- 54,000 square foot
concrete apron (ground side)
- 18,000 square foot
ancillary asphalt apron
Every aspect of the
building from construction materials, finishes, mechanical and electrical
systems, and landscaping was designed to maximize efficiency and reduce the
building’s environmental impact.
Building Design and
Construction
The building skin is
all metal, glass and concrete block. All exterior material is renewable and
has no maintenance requirement. The interior structure is of concrete and
steel all renewable materials with minimal impact on the environment.
A solar wall on the
south side of the hangar pre-heats the air before it is circulated by the
building’s ventilation system. Pre-heating of the air is cutting back on
the use of fossil fuels and consequently on greenhouse gas emissions. The
solar wall is estimated to save 1.052 MJs of energy per year, 11 per cent
of the building’s total gas consumption and will save the institute about
$7,900.00 annually on its gas bill.
As with the
landscaping, every effort has been made to reduce the use of water by
building occupants. Low flush toilets and low flow faucets are incorporated
throughout the facility.
Occupancy sensors
attached to the building’s operating system control power and heating for
all classrooms and shops. After 10 minutes of undetected motion or activity
the power, lighting and ventilation is automatically reduced. High
efficiency lighting is used throughout the building. The sensors and
efficiency lighting will reduce power costs from a baseline of $101,582 to
$74,612.

"The
Evolving Office"
Sandy Hillmer
Director of Sales
Krug
Sandy is an entrepreneurial sales manager dedicated to the process of
sales, design in its many forms, and wood as a material for furniture. Her
passion for design has an emotional and a practical perspective. After
teaching business students at Ryerson and starting her own furniture
agency, Sandy joined the corporate world of furniture at Knoll. Sandy has
been a seller, a Marketing Manager, and a Divisional Vice President working
with a variety of clients bringing them the best solutions money can buy.
Always concerned about the impact of the office on productivity of the firm
and the contentment of the individual, Sandy is now the Canadian Director
of Sales for Krug Inc.
The “Evolving Office”
grew out of an interest in what is really going on in the office. Krug, a
125 year-old company, has been supplying wood furniture for offices long
before many of us were born. Is the growth sustainable? Is the 10’ by 15’
office really here to stay? Will the office disappear along with all the
paper? Does it really matter where your office is? Will the dogma of the
open plan office dictate what happens to the office in 2005 and beyond?
Lots of questions!
Sandy’s casual and
engaging style is sure to get you thinking. She reads over 15 design
magazines a month and every new business book she can afford.
Come and enjoy the
“Evolving Office” and maybe you will come up with the answers Sandy is
seeking.
